INSIDE THE DAIRY: MARSHMALLOW (AND A TRIVIA QUESTION)

Posted by Turkey Hill Team on May 18th, 2011

A few weeks ago, we saw 50-gallon barrels of fudge being emptied to make Tin Roof Sundae ice cream. Here we see a member of the Turkey Hill team pouring out marshmallow, which will added to chocolate ice cream to make Chocolate Marshmallow Premium ice cream. Chocolate Marshmallow Premium is one of five Turkey Hill flavors to use marshmallow as an ingredient. Can anyone name the other four?

I have never tried any Turkey Hill ice cream with marshmallow. Obviously, Carol and Jilly have. This gives me an incentive to check the stores for these flavors. If I am lucky I might find all the flavors, buy them, and enjoy them for several weeks to come.

I don’t really care for marshmallow, but the article is interesting.

Tension is budding between a flower vendor and Nockamixon officials.

At their board meeting Wednesday night, Laura Giarratana tearfully pleaded with Nockamixon supervisors, asking for a deal that would allow her to continue to sell her spring flowers from a roadside stand on Route 611.

The 25-year-old Falls woman rents a car sales lot, selling vehicles year-round, and selling the flowers during the month of May.

Located across the street from the Turkey Hill shopping center, the car lot, and the empty businesses that sit on the property, are zoned commercial.

For the last four years Giarratana has operated the flower stand, and each year the township has ordered to stop.

Supervisors say she is in violation of ordinances that restrict how many businesses can operate on the same parcel.

“You’ve continued to operate contrary to what the zoning allows,” Nockamixon Township attorney Jordan Yeager told Giarratana on Wednesday.

    .
The young businesswoman has been served numerous citations, ordering her to shut down the flower stand.

Giarratana told the board she hasn’t filed an appeal because she can’t afford to hire an attorney or pay the roughly $2,500 in township fees to seek a variance from the zoning hearing board.

Resident Edmund Kemble asked supervisors to make an exception.

“Can’t we change the ordinance to help this girl? She only wants permission for 30 days,” said Kemble, a candidate for supervisor. “She’s just a small business person. We should be helping someone like this.”

All business owners in Nockamixon are expected to follow the same rules, said Yeager.

“Year after year, you continue to do it in the face of the notices to not do it,” Yeager told Giarratana. “We’re not going to allow the repeated violation of the township’s ordinances.”

On Wednesday night, supervisors unanimously voted to pursue legal action against the property owners.

Supervisors Nancy Janyszeski and Al Santopietro were absent.

“There are other seasonal flower sales that are all around me that aren’t getting any enforcement or anything,” said Giarratana, pointing to a vendor who sells flowers at the shopping center across the street.

Wiping away tears, Giarratana said she feels intimated and harassed by township officials.

“As much as these people scare me by telling me to stop, I’m not 100 percent confident that they’re right,” she said, noting that she should be allowed unlimited retail sales on a commercially zoned property.

“There should be no designation, if it’s one thing (I’m selling) or 20 things – whether it’s clothes, shoes, books or bikes.”

I loved the picture of the ice cream coming down the the line. I wanted to get my spoon and start digging in right away!

  26. Pat says:

Although I haven’t had any for about 30 years, Strawberry Marshmallow is my favorite ice cream. The company who made the flavor went out of business many years ago and haven’t had any since. Friday My husband and daughter and I went to the Turkey Hill Experience and I once again made my favorite ice Cream = Strawberry Marshmallow where we can make a flavor that we can make. Had a real good time, and it is well worth the effort to go there and spend a few hours. It really takes that long if you want to read everything that is there. I hope all Turkey Hill fans get a chance to go to the Turkey Hill Experience.

I’d love to know what that is so delicious.
