TODAY’S ICE CREAM FACT: In the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, ice cream street vendors would sell ice cream in glass containers called a “penny lick.” As the name implies, the sweet treat would cost just a penny.
In addition to our featured ice cream fact, we also wanted to take some time to introduce everyone to Turkey Hill’s new batch of summer marketing interns with the Q&A below.
NAME: Emily (Lancaster, PA), Jen (Lancaster, PA), Madeline (Willow Street, PA), Jess (York, PA)
FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR: Jess – Phillies Batter Up, Jen – Blitzburgh Crunch, Emily – Mint Chocolate Chip, Madeline – Party Cake
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT TURKEY HILL? This is Madeline’s third summer, Jess’s second, and Jen and Emily’s first.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF:
Jen: I finished my sophomore year at Elizabethtown College, where I’m majoring in International Business & Spanish. I’m looking forward to studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain in the fall.
Madeline: I graduated from Penn State University in May with a degree in Advertising. I’m very personable and I enjoy this position because I get to meet and interact with a lot of people when I work at events!
Jess: I recently completed my sophomore year at Millersville University where I’m studying Communication, with a focus in Broadcasting. I am huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and hope to one day become a sideline reporter for the NFL.
Emily: I just graduated from Penn Manor High School, and will be attending Elizabethtown College in the fall. I am planning on studying Occupational Therapy, and will also be playing soccer for my school.
WHAT ARE YOUR DUTIES AS MARKETING INTERNS?
We get to travel to many different events throughout the summer and hand out samples of Turkey Hill ice cream. You might catch us at baseball games, state fairs, football training camps, and even local Turkey Hill Minit Markets.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT TURKEY HILL DURING THE SUMMER?
The free ice cream, of course! We also like traveling to new places and getting a chance to interact with the people who enjoy our products. It’s always funny to see the reactions when our drivers arrive at an event with one of our giant cows!
WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU NEXT?
Our next big events include sampling at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on the 4th of July and Yankee Stadium on July 9 & 10. If you’re at one of these events, grab some free ice cream, and say hello!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Wish I could be at Yankee Stadium for the Turkey Hill samples in July! I need to get up to see the new stadium one of these days…
It’s a red, white and blueberry kind of day:)
Happy Fourth of July weekend to the TH folks, and ALL of their fans (including me)!
HAPPY ICE CREAM MONTH AND HAPPY 4T OF JULY!
The penny lick must have been as popular as the 2 cent plain which was popular in that era.
Your interns have a great job. There is nothing better than making people happy and free TH is near or at the top of the list.
sounds so funny a penny lick. everyone have a happy and safe 4th
Penny ice cream sounds cool! You could get 5 different flavors for a nickel!
What did you say? You are coming to Rochester,NH? I could go for some free ice cream!
Oh, to be a Turkey Hill intern!!!!!!!!!!!
Just had my “lick” of Turkey Hill. The thermostat is really rising and your frozen yogurt was totally refreshing.
great job!
So nice to meet such energetic girls doing their bit for Turkey Hill. This could lead to a perment job, just think, free ice cream the rest of your working days. YUMMY
Hope to see the special interns at the Turkey Hill Experience. Good luck in your respective educational fields.
Sounds like the PERFECT job to me – my two favorite things – talking with people and eating ice cream!!
I REALY ENJOY TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM AND I HOPE THAT ONE DAY ME AND MY DAD AND BROTHER WOULD TOUR THE TURKEY HILL FACTORY
They’re all adorable! Maybe my daughter can intern there next summer!
)
Penny Ice Cream: If my mom were here today, god rest her sole, she’d get a kick out of “Today’s Ice Cream Fact” and tell me “See, this is what I was I was talking about!” Seeing the photo of the tiny “penny” ice cream cone brought back a wonderful memory of moms’ “childhood” story of ice cream cones no bigger than her finger (she would always put up her pinky finger) that cost a penny. I always believed her story but it was hard to imagine until today. Thanks Turkey Hill Team.
Worth every penny!
Oh, how I would have loved to have done my internship at Turkey Hill! I’m sure it would have been more fun than my radio promotions one. Bring that Turkey Hill product line to Citizens Bank Park very soon, TH interns!!!
Heinz Field – Go Steelers! Jess, maybe by the time the NFL and players come to an agree you’ll be a sideline reporter. I’ll be watching for you – good luck!
first time the first of june every week since outstanding icecream thanks dee
I buy a variety of Turkey Hill ice cream because my family craves a different kind every night and you have the all that we could ever want and are still coming up with more.
Saw the Turkey Hill Ice Cream at Hershey Park. It was great and also a reat fit at the park. The kids loved it!
Sounds like a great job! Hope to see the interns sometime this Summer for some free ice cream!!
Thanks for sharing this historical tidbit about the penny lick! I never knew this and would love to find one of this little glass containers for hubby who loves to collect such things. We’ll have fun on the hunt!
As much as we love Turkey Hill, though, we’d need a gazillion of these at one serving! lol
Great to meet some of the beautiful young girls working at Turkey Hill. They look “fresh off the farm” lovely! Too bad the penny lick didn’t make it through the years, although the cost would certainly not be a penny…but what fun!
a penny’s worth of ice cream doesnt seem like enough!
I am old enough to remember the ice cream for a penny but it was not as good as your coconut almond fudge light ice cream which is my favorite and I am addicted to !
I wish there was ice cream that only cost a penny now~ LOL With 105 degree heat, ice cream is a must to have in our house!
I think I will have to check out the event at Heinz Field this weekend!
What a great summer experience for the girls. Enjoy it as much as you enjoy the Turkey Hill Ice Cream!
we love turkey hill icecream on all these hot summer days it is our favorite ice cream
What a great job! but I would give 5 licks for the new Fried Ice Cream cause you can’t find it anywhere Happy 4th of July everyone !!!
Wow, travel AND Turkey Hill ice cream…now that’s what I call an internship.
Jen is so lucky to be studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain in the fall. That would be AMAZING!!!!
Wow! The four of you are lucky to have such a great opportunity.
I would love to have a job that free ice cream was a perk. How COOL!
I just love Turkey Hill ice cream. You have a great selection of flavors and I love to try the Limited Editions when they come out.
I just love Turkey Hill Ice cream. You have a great variety of flavors and I love to try the limited editions when they come out.
Interesting fact! I envy those girls for interning at Turkey Hill – what an awesome job!
I just ate a big ole bowl of Skinny Minty and it was wonderful! I can’t say enough about how much my family loves your ice cream!
Living in Pittsburgh, I thought I should try the Blitzburgh Crunch. Now I have another favorite. Actually, I haven’t met a flavor I didn’t like! I keep hoping they come out with peanut butter flavored ice cream… nothing added, just peanut butter bliss
Is 67, but young at heart, too old for an internship? I’d be raring to go.
I gobble for your ice cream. It’s the best.
I wonder how you find out about these internships and how you are selected. It looks like it is rewarding in more ways than one. It’s certainly a nice way to spend the summer.
I love the chocolate ice cream. It’s is deliciously creamy.
Best of luck to all your new summer interns….Boy they have the best jobs for the summer.
Doing a good job, girls. Never knew about the penny lick. It just wouldn’t be enough of TH for me.
That penny lick sure looks like a quick dose of refreshment!
there is not a turkey hill ice cream i don’t like. when we travel down south there is no turkey hill ice cream . we are spoil in the north. love my turkey hill products.
Internships can be the best jobs ever! Good luck to you girls.
Penny licks reminds me of the ‘baby cone’ we used to be able to get at a local ice cream store on Rte9 years ago. I think it was 50 cents or a dollar and it was a cute little baby ice cream cone. Dad used to get them for us kids because believe it or not, we couldn’t finish the big cones!
Ice cream for a penny? I’m all for that—bring it on
What a fun and interesting place to work for the summer – and yummy!
I love Turkey Hill ice cream! Is there any chance you’ll be coming around Hackettstown, N.J. anytime soon? Great area to take up shop!
Hi! I’m a teacher and usually work every summer. Maybe I should move to Lancaster so I can be a summer intern. I would like to try every cool, yummy flavor of Turkey Hill and create one called ‘School’s Out for Summer’!
Don’t know about anyone else, but I require much more than a lick!
Boy, I wish I could get ice cream for a penny!!
I love your Strawberry ice cream on Waffles for breakfast.
I’d be a very happy person if ice cream cones still cost just a penny.
I’d love a job at Turkey Hill. I can just imagine the perks! (free or discounted ice cream)
this is a great story, ice cream for a penny and cuties just for fun. enjoyed the info, thanks
PLEASE deliver Rum Raisin, and Chocolate Peanut Butter to the Detroit area—thanx
“Penny Licks” sounds wonderful, sure wish they still had them. $.20 could get me 5 licks of each the flavors your summer marketing interns like. MMMMMMM Yummy.
interesting story.
What a great job! Summertime, friends, ice cream and a paycheck.
WHO DOESN’T LOVE THE ICE CREAM MAN I FOR ONE DO NOT. I JUST LOVE THE SELECTION OF TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM IN MY FREEZER AND I DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO THAT ANNOYING MUSIC.
Oh, my! Did anyone read the description of the “penny lick”? The customer licks out the contents of the glass, and it was not washed between customers!! I’ll stick with my own private cartons of Turkey Hill.
Happy 4th of July! I love that it is National Ice Cream month! Had some Bavarian Espresso tonight.
Ice cream sounds Delicious…especially for the Fourth Of July!! Happy 4th of July!!
It’s too bad it still doesn’t cost a penny
That penny lick is the perfect size for me! I try not to eat a lot of ice cream in one sitting so that would be great . . throughout the day
Somebody mentioned yankee stadium? I must go sit outside during that time
The picture at the top of the page . . I love that small ice cream cone. Do they sell those? Turkey Hill should market those small cones. I would definitely purchase them because it seems like it would hold just the right serving size for myself and small children.
I wish that ice cream was a penny! Though, Turkey Hill does have affordable prices!
You seem to have your flavors of ice cream mixed up with the persons holding them. Madeline is holding “Batter Up” not Jess, etc.
Happy 4th! We celebrated mom’s 97th birthday with the family and you know the highlight of the day was Turkey Hill sundaes we all got to make. We had Chocolate Chip, Double Dunker, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cherry Vanilla and all the fixings. What a time we all had.
a penny’s worth is not nearly enough!! that would just whet my appetite…when are you coming to Citizen’s Bank Park??
In the 19th century a penny could get you a whole lot more than it does now. The United States bought Louisiana in 1803 for the princely some of less than 3 cents per acre. I am pretty sure that the land is worth quite a bit more, even in today’s economy.
I think the most popular ice cream topping is whipped cream. We like it on our ice cream. I think sprinkles would also be up there on the top!
