A somewhat recent Village Voice blog entry revealed “5 weird ice cream flavors to try in New York City.” Among the strange treats is a flavor called mastic ice cream, which is made by a Manhattan ice cream shop called Victory Garden. The shop makes all of its ice cream with goat’s milk, which they describe as having a “delicious, slightly sweet flavor.”
For those who aren’t familiar with it, mastic is a tree resin (like a sap). The earliest uses of hardened mastic were as a chewing gum. Today, mastic is used as an ingredient in various dishes in countries like Greece, Turkey, and Lebanon. So how does mastic ice cream taste? The Village Voice offers this input: “Naturally, piney flavors shine, plus the texture is slightly chewier than most ice creams.” That’s a picture of it above with a sour cherry sauce and chopped pistachios.
It doesn’t sound bad if you like your ice cream piney fresh, which leads us to the ultimate question — Would you eat it?

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
it does not sound like anything bad, so of course I would eat it, it may be very good
no thank you i don’t like to eat pine…
It’s ice cream – how bad could it be? Yeah, I’d try it!
I like Rosemary which is a member of the pine family so of course I would give it a go.
Chewy ice cream, well I’d have to try it. The next time I’m in New York City, I’ll stop at the Victory Garden and give it a try. The bowl of mastic ice cream in the picture LOOKS Yummy.
I might try this one… it’s a lot more appealing than some of the other weird flavors I’ve heard of, like smoked salmon!
it looks good would try it why not but i will never get to new york but can dream about something new why do we have to do recaptchai cant alway read them or understand them
WHY NOT!
Personally, I’m always up for trying new things! I think it would be an interesting flavor.

Sure, I’d give it a try! Two of my favorite non-TH ice cream flavors are ginger & red bean. Those are a bit different than our norm, but very yummy!
NYC can have it’s weird ice cream….I’m sticking with my favorite, Turkey Hill!
To me ice cream has alway been smooth and creamy. This flavor is out of the ordinary. I wouldn’t try it. I’ll stick with the great flavors from Turkey Hill.
pass
I’m not sure.
Guess I’d take a spoonful but do’t see it becoming my favorite. I really just want to stick with my TH.
Well, this has got me to thinking that pine nuts would go GREAT with ice cream! Too bad they’re so expensive, and go rancid so quickly!
Probably not!
Sounds interesting. I would give it a try!!
I highly doubt it. Pine Sol?!
I love the smell of pine trees, but I don’t think I want it in my ice cream!
Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll stick with the tried and true and only one—Turkey Hill!!!!!!!Yum!!!!!!!
Sure. Sounds pretty good.
Absolutely would try! Sounds delicious!
I’d give it a taste. Sounds better then some other flavors that were shown in this very blog along with the “would you eat it” question.
Sure I would try it and probably like it. Always willing to try new ice creams
I would probably taste it but maybe not eat it exactly unless it was delicious like Turkey Hill.
It just does not appeal to mt. Today I went to Wegman’s amd got my Orange Grove==I was in heacen.
I guess I would be willing to give it a taste. No cherries or pistachios for me though……allergies.
I think Turkey Hill should be the first to make Halva flavored ice cream. Maybe like a Halva swirl in Vanilla ice cream…..that is really ethnic and delicious! also the new buzz word is acai! sort of an earthy berry like a blackberry, might be good as well and jump on the band wagon of super foods!
acai icea cream would be incredibly popular in this market.
A spoonful or so…
but to re-interate, “there ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby!
NOT FOR ME. I WILL STICK TO MY TURKEY HILL FAVORITES.
I do not think i wouldtry this.
I’d be willing to try it.
No, it sounds like a room freshener.
Guess I would have to try it!! There is an awesome goat milk stand in Lancaster’s Central Market!!
