The other day, the conversation here at the Dairy offices turned to ice cream world records. One thing led to another, and someone suggested that maybe Turkey Hill should take a shot at one of the records. It’s not a bad idea. After all, if you’re going to attempt a world record, what could be more fun than an ice cream record?
We paid a visit to the Guinness Book of World Record website to see what the record books hold for ice cream feats, and the following is what we found. Which record do you think sounds the most extraordinary, and which one do you think Turkey Hill should take a shot at? We can’t say for sure if we’ll try it, but your input might inspire us to give it a shot!
1. “Most ice cream scoops thrown and caught in one minute by a team of two” — The record for most ice cream scoops thrown and caught in one minute by a team of two is 25, achieved by Gabriele Soravia (thrower) and Lorenzo Soravia (catcher) (both Germany), on the set of Guinness World Records – Die größten Weltrekorde in Cologne, Germany, on 1 September 2007.
2. “Most ice cream scoops balanced on a cone” — The most ice cream scoops balanced on a cone is 26 and was achieved by Terry Morris (New Zealand) on the set of Zheng Da Zong Yi – Guinness World Records Special in Beijing, China, on 20 May 2010.
3. “Most ice cream cones prepared in one minute” — The most ice cream cones prepared in one minute is 19 and is held by Mitch Cohen (USA) who broke the record on the Food Network TV show Paula’s Party on 28 June 2007.
4. “Most flavors of ice cream displayed together” –The most varieties of ice cream displayed together is 521 by the UPA Gelatieri Padova at the 500 tastes of solidarity event, Cavour Square, Padova, Italy on 28 March 2004.
5. “Longest ice cream dessert” — The longest ice cream dessert was a sundae measuring 39.77 m (130 ft 6 in) prepared by The Kids Club (USA) in Brunswick, Georgia, USA, on 12 November 2009.
6. “Longest chain of people licking ice cream” — The longest chain of people licking ice cream was achieved by 2,694 participants at an event organised by Augustana College (USA) in Rock Island, Illinois, USA, on 20 April 2010.
7. “Largest ice cream sculpture” — The world’s largest ice cream sculpture, shaped like an 18th century ship, weighed 925 kg (2,039.4 lb), used 1,715.54 litres (453.2 gal) of chocolate and vanilla ice cream and was created by Jacques Tokar, Antoine Tokar and Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream (all USA). The sculpture was unveiled at Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School, Burbank, California, USA on 14 November 2002.
8. “Largest (tallest) ice cream cone” — The largest ice cream cone measured 2.81 m (9 ft 2.63 in) in height and was achieved by Mirco Della Vecchia and Andrea Andrighetti (both Italy) during an event organised by Rimini Fiera and sponsored by Sigep, Fabbri, Incisoria Imar, Icam, Martellato (all Italy), at Rimini Fiera, in Rimini, Italy, on 22 January 2011.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Longest dessert would be fun especially if you made it here in Columbus and I got to help make it and eat it!
#1 seems like it would be a lot of fun and then #3 would be too…hmm, you just have to look around the plant and figure out who would be the best particpants to break the record!!
#7 – make an ice cream sculpture of Bo!
That would be fun!
Turkey Hill is too good to waste so I vote for most scoops placed on a cone or most cones prepared in a minute.
I say you guys should try #5 or #6. Or both!
#6 and #7 seem to be the most fun and achievable. Good luck.
I like #6, especially if we got all the Turkey Hill lovers in one place! It would be a no-brainer that no-one could beat!!!
My vote is #3 or #6
Most on a cone would make for a great circus act!
#2 and #3 seem like the best ones to try here. Just let me be there to help judge and to eat the ice cream.
my favorite is #6 followed by #1 and #3
The longest chain of people licking ice cream! Let me know, I’ll bring the whole gang.
Longest chain of people licking ice cream! Call me I’m ready!!
they all are great feats and would have like to start eating the ice crean if only if it was turkey hill
I would go with #3 as long there are enough people to receive the cones and enjoy them. I am for not wasting a good thing even if its for a record.
First try #6..everyone would love it. If not, #5 looks very beatable!
i think you should have a turkey hill fair maybe out side of the new turkey hill shop/cafe, have games and events, food stations etc. a few of the events could be diffrent compitions for a few of the records. a fun way to spend the day, good family bonding time and great publicity for turkey hill one of the high lights could be everyone at the event standing in line and licking an ice cream cone.if your crew feel up to it go for the BIG desert. there is so much you could do with this idea and if your really feeling good about it then a portion of what is earned can be donated to charity.
#6…all the TH bloggers should line up-what fun that would be!!!
The longest chain of people would be my pick… you would have an endless list of volunteers!
The longest chain–I’ll volunteer and I know of several others who would too.
“Longest chain of people licking ice cream”…I volunteer to participate! Yum!
Try them all!!!!!!!!
I think #4 or #7 would be interesting!!
#3 im sure you can do it
#6 and I volunteer to be one of the lickees!
I vote for 5 or 6–something we could all enjoy when we are through!
I think you should go for number 3 – most ice cream cones prepared in one minute. This is the only one I see where you wouldn’t waste ice cream. As you finish each cone you give it to someone to enjoy. Who can afford to waste any Turkey Hill ice cream?! You can do it at some scheduled or special event e.g. a summer county fair.
I like #7. A GIANT ICE CREAM COW!! Also #3 and #5 sound like fun.
I would go for #5 and then share the ice cream. I wouldn’t want to see all that ice cream go to waste which would happen on a lot of these feats.
#1 seems like fun. Leave USA records alone.
Longest Ice Cream Dessert- My kids here in Lancaster love Turkey Hill Ice Cream and would LOVE to be a part of a WORLD RECORD- especially involving ice cream and it would be a great community event!
5 SOUNDS GOOD TO ME
Have a Turkey Hill record breakers day. Attempt to break as many records as possible. Eastern States Expo would be a good place to do it.
I would like to see the record for #4 beaten.
#3 would make a nice competition at you new center in Columbia. Who knows it may become an annual compitition for the center, with a prisem for the winner even if the record is not broken.Look down the line, if people keep trying to win the competion the record might be broken.
Those are some amazing facts. balancing 26 scoops, but was he able to eat them before they melted?
I vote for #6 – the longest chain of people licking ice cream cones
They all sound like fun & doable. But, I think I like ice cream chain the best….just let me know when & where & I’ll be there!
Largest ice cream sculpture! Making one in Pennsylvania during the winter has to have an edge over Burbank’s temps due to the decrease the meltyness!
i like #3 and or #6…keep me in mind for #6!!
#6…no waste and delicious record to break! come to central park in nyc and i’ll join you!
many if these sound like they are already melting, I like 5. “Longest ice cream dessert” and
6. “Longest chain of people licking ice cream”
I would participate in either one.
#6, I volunteer to do that
I think you should try the Largest ice cream cone so I can
Eat all the ice cream I want.!!!!!!:)
The largest sculpture. Shape it like Lancaster County with all if it’s famous landmarks including The Turkey Hill Experience.
These are all great, but you should know that about 3 schools, including ours most recently, have set new records for the “longest ice cream dessert” and our applicaiton is going throuhg the Guinness process. You can still try it, but the one listed on the site will not last long.
You’re right though, it is a lot of fun and it is a great community builder.
