Weekly prize: The electric ice cream scoop!

Nothing can interfere more with a late night ice cream craving than hard ice cream. We’ve all been there. You open the freezer, take a few seconds to ponder your frosty options, grab a spoon, a bowl and a scoop and dig in. But instead of dipping effortlessly into the soon-to-be-dessert, your scoop meets what appears to be something resembling concrete.

We’re never sure exactly why this happens, especially since, at other times, your ice cream emerges from the freezer soft as a cloud, but it happens (and usually at the worst possible times). But now there’s a solution: the Deni 5111 electric ice cream scoop! According to Amazon.com, where this brilliant invention sells for $18.88, the electric scoop “cuts through the hardest ice cream with no effort” and “heats up in minutes and retains its temperature scoop after scoop.”

Plus, it looks kind of cool (that’s it on the right). One comment from all the comments left on the blog this week will be chosen at random to win this life-saver.

It’s my dream scoop!!! Oh please let me win this one!!!

  34. Nancy N says:

Glad to know it isn’t just my freezer when the ice cream is hard one time and soft the next! An electric scoop sounds awesome. I sometimes have to have my husband dish up the ice cream because it is too hard for me or microwave it for a few seconds to soften it enough to scoop. Sure would be nice to have a scoop like this. If I don’t win, I just might have to put it on my “Christmas Wish List”! :-)

  35. Jean Marie says:

What a clever idea! It’s a lot better than a regular scoop. This looks easier on your wrist.

One instance where I think this product would help is when trying to scoop the ice cream with a regular scooper or a spoon when it’s really frozen and after dipping the scoop/sppon into the ice cream and trying to dish it out, the ice cream ends up flying across the table!

  47. Ben says:

It could be very useful for scooping chocolate ice creams.

  48. Reno says:

Finally! Someone figured out how to help all of us impatient ice cream eaters not to bend any more spoons! Thank you!

  49. ellie hudson says:

I love Turkey Hill ice cream – my favorite way to eat it – with an ice cream cone. When summertime comes and I turn the temperature down on my refrigerator, the ice cream becomes hard as a rock making it impossible to scoop and make a nice neat ice cream cone. How great this would be to not only have great tasting ice cream and look neat and more appealing using this ice cream scoop.

    Ellie

  50. jconley says:

WELL, this week we wouldn’t have needed the electric ice cream scoop because our refrigerator DIED!!!!! I opened the freezer to get my TH Double Dunker & my husband’s TH Mint Chocolate Chip out for an evening snack & there it was, all melted in the bottom of the freezer!!! Needless to say, we weren’t very happy! We had to quickly take the rest of our food to my sister’s to her freezer (The temperature was 24 degrees ~ just cold enough for the food, but NOT for the ice cream!) THEN, the rest of the refrigerator died. We went shopping for a new refrigerator right away!!! NOW, we’re back in business, thank goodness!!!

I think this would be a geat product I live with 90 year old woman and someone who is handicapped. When they want ice cream they have to wait till I come home as niether of them is strong enough to get any from the ice cream ROCK that is what is in the ice cream container. We buy Turkey Hill often but end up throwing it out as I get home from work too late for them to have ice cream

  65. Bob Pescinski says:

Now if it could also give a nice shock to the person who I DIDN’T want to scoop my Turkey Hill ice cream… THAT would be an electric scoop!

never to old for no things.

  76. Caroline of Manalapan says:

Come on Ernie, do we need another gadget that requires batteries or has to constantly be recharged. If my TH is too hard I just place it in the microwave for 15 seconds but prefer to dig into the rock making the savory flavor more enjoyable as it slowly melt on my taste buds. I agree with Robin above but would settle for 5 gallons.

  77. Jim Edwards says:

Now, this brings reality to the statement, “Scoop this!!”

  78. John says:

I’d kinda miss the art of dipping it

  79. Heather Martin says:

Sounds good on paper, but how warm does it actually get? Won’t it melt the ice cream too much? Nothing worse than ice cream soup.

Electric! I worked in an ice cream shop when I was a teen. What a joy an electric scooper would have been and what fun now. Enter me to win

  120. Tom M says:

Let me get this straight. The electric heats the spoon and then the warmed spoon softens the ice cream as you manually scoop the ice cream out. Why call it an electric spoon which gives it the connotation that it actually does the scooping by itself electrically. It should just have been called a heated ice cream scoop. It runs on batteries I suppose??

Anything is better than using a regular spoon which bends backwards when scooping ice cream!

  129. My husband would feel like a gourmet chef with a scooper like this.

  130. Bob Kessler Jr says:

I wonder how long is the cord. You have to bring the ice cream close to a plug if the cord is short. Of course with anything electrical something could go wrong. Just give me a big spoon to scoop out my favorite flavor of Turkey Hill.

  154. Barb says:

Just what I need for my Turkey Hill Ice Cream!!!

  155. Jim Ambrose says:

Gosh darn, the battery ran down and I have to do it the hard way. I’ll get the scissors, cut the carton off the ice cream and dump it in a bowl.

  157. Donna says:

It certainly sounds like something that would come in handy.

  179. Jim in SOMD says:

“Heats up in minutes”, who wants to wait for the ice cream scoop to heat up? You probably would already be eating your ice cream using the old fashioned regular scoop. I guess you could start using the electric scoop while it is heating up. Anyway, unless the heating is instantaneous, the price is way too high. I guess if your post is selected, it would be fun for a kid to use it when the icecream is concrete hard. I, of course, am assuming that it does not get so hot that it could burn someone’s skin.

  180. B. J. Geiser Cameron says:

You can get ready to enjoy your ice cream in the future with this wonderful ice cream scoop.

My favorite ice cream scoop is the one my son gave me a few years ago. It had a note attached that said, “Hey Mom, here’s your Mother’s Day gift. If it is a piece of junk, it was $1.00. An electric one sure would come in handy when this one doesn’t scoop the TH.

  184. trisha dowling says:

  192. JOHN S. says:

JIM in SOMD !>>>Come on Buddy-Boy lighten up !! You know the function IS heat to semi-melt the icecream so that you can get it into the bowl. At our house WE super-freeze everything and ice cream freezes rock-hard. This tool would be indespensible for us to have. We now take a large cleaver, heat it over a gas stove and cut”Rock-hard” Ice cream cakes the same way !!! OBVIOUSLY caution is the watch ward here Jimbo. Do you stop using sewing needles because you could puncture a finger? Do You stop using a power saw because you could cut off your hand? Same here dude,,, use caution where it is warranted and LIGHTEN UP !!! John S.

  193. JOHN S. says:

…. Reply to Angie Tierney… LIGHTEN UP GIRL !! your comment ” Maybe better yet there’s a fool born every minute…”" is kind of irrelevant here… MAYBE you MAY NOT HAVE A NEED FOR SUCH A DEVICE , BUT DONT SQUASH SOMEONE ELSE”s IDEA OF A PRODUCT THAT WOULD HELP SOME OF US WHO USE our FREEZER CAPABILITIES TO THE MAX. DID YOU ALSO LAUGH AT THE IDEA THAT MAN WOULD NEVER LAND ON THE MOON ? : MANY DiD. iF IT FILLD A DO YOU HAMMER NAILS WITH A ROCK ?? THANK GOD THERE ARE HAMMERS GIRLIE-GIRL. I REST MY CASE. John S.

  194. David says:

We conduct fundraisers at work serving approximately 70 – 80 people in two hours. We had an old electric one that broke, now after usung as regular scoop, I realize how much I miss the electric model!
