Would you eat it? (Black licorice ice cream)

Posted by Turkey Hill Team on March 1st, 2013

Black licorice is one of those treats that you either love or you hate. A quick poll here at Turkey Hill reveals four people who love it, four people who hate it and one person who claims to have never eaten it (and we believe her because if she had it, she’d remember it).

Until now, it was only available in licorice form, but a shop in California has taken the flavor to a new level with black licorice-flavored ice cream. As you can see in the picture above, the color is very dark. We’re guessing it’s one of those treats that will stain your tongue, which kind of adds to the fun of it, don’t you think?

Fun or not, the question remains: Would you eat it?

I like licorice, but I had never even given a thought until my wife and I took a trip to Iceland a few years ago. At the end of the trip, we had a little Icelandic money left over. Wanting to get rid of it before leaving, I purchased a chocolate covered vanilla Popsicle. When I got near the stick, I was surprised by the licorice taste. I thought it was some kind of joke (or worse). I asked the man at the counter about it; he laughed and went on to explain that it’s normal in Iceland to put licorice on the stick in the middle of Popsicles. After consideration, I thought that the taste was pretty good. If you like licorice, you’ll probably like black licorice ice cream!

Although, yeah, I’d try it. What a great Halloween treat or “Over the Hill” party dessert. I know some weddings that could/should use.
The possibilities are endless. Celebrate your divorce, tacky, huh. Dinner with the monster in law. Bruins, (or other,) team parties. Get over it/him/her……..I.C. cake made of bk I.C. and white choc topping. (Comfort food.)
Who cares, what it tastes like. The novelty would make people want it at their next bash !!!
Okay, where and when do I get it? Halloween is coming. And a relative’s b-day.

  84. Janice says:

Not to question the people at Turkey Hill’s expertise with ice cream, but I remember Baskin-Robbins (defunct ice cream shop chain) having licorice ice cream – equally dark – in the 70s. I didn’t like it then and probably wouldn’t try it now.

Oh my goodness, that sounds so wonderful. Licorice is my favorite flavor. I’m thinking about having a licorice milk shake, a Black Russian with ice cream instead of Sambucca, and putting a scoop in my coffee. Please let me know when you make this flavor available to purchase!

  132. A Bietsch says:

Never. Licorice is too dominant a flavor. It is so strong that I bet most folks would only be able to eat a tablespoon or two at a sitting. And that color, – stains your clothes, your tongue, the kitchen counter where you left a drip, and your fingers. Why not make an anise flavored one? No black color, and a milder flavor would put it in the “I’ll try it” column for me.

I would love tto try it.

  137. Tom says:

Nowadays it’s not so easy to find – apparently a lot of people don’t like it – or won’t give it a try. I think it’s really good!
