OPERATION HOMETOWN HELLO A SUCCESS!

You may remember — or have participated in — Turkey Hill’s Operation Hometown Hello program which took place in July.

Operation Hometown Hello was a partnership between Turkey Hill Dairy and Turkey Hill Minit Markets which helped collect donations of snacks and other goodies to be shipped to the brave men and women of the Pennsylvania National Guard currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. All you had to do was make a donation in an Operation Hometown Hello box found at any participating Turkey Hill Minit Market. Once the box was filled up, we shipped it off the troops who are always happy to get a taste of home.

We’re proud to announce that Operation Hometown Hello was a success! Thanks to your donations, we shipped more than 550 boxes of beef jerky, bubblegum and other treats overseas to eagerly waiting soldiers. That’s over 5,500 pounds of stuff, or almost one pound for every member of the Pennsylvania National Guard currently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan!

Below are a few pictures of the troops with the treats many of you donated. Seeing these photos makes us wish we could take the Giant Cow over there and throw a huge ice cream party for these guys. If anyone deserves some time off and a few scoops of mint chocolate chip, it’s them!

FEATURED PHOTO: PEPSI ICE CREAM?

No, this isn’t Photoshop magic, it’s a real Pepsi product. Before you get too excited, I should tell you that this product is only available in Russia. But it’s also sort of available in the U.S. That’s because “Pepsi Ice Cream” is really the Russian version of “Pepsi Vanilla.” Same recipe, different name! Actually, you can’t get Pepsi Vanilla any more. It’s been discontinued. But you can still purchase its similar-tasting rival, Vanilla Coke.

For the record, Pepsi makes all sorts of interesting flavors only available in other countries. Check out the whole list here, including Pepsi Ice Cucumber (a Japanese version with cucumber flavoring), Pepsi Fire (cinnamon flavored Pepsi sold in Mexico, Thailand and other Asian countries) and Pepsi Blue Hawaii (a pineapple and lemon flavored variety sold in Japan and blue in color).

Speaking of overseas, Turkey Hill Dairy and Turkey Hill Minit Market’s “Operation Hometown Hello” is going very well. In just two weeks, we’ve collected more than 750 pounds of donations (75 boxes) to be shipped to the troops serving overseas. Look for the Operation Hometown Hello box at one of 250 Turkey Hill Minit Markets throughout eastern, central and southern Pennsylvania and make a donation. It’s a shame we can’t send the troops some Pepsi Ice Cream!

SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS AND THE BEST ICE CREAM PHOTO WE’VE SEEN ALL WEEK

Just a couple announcements on this Independence Day eve, with a delicious photo at the end. First, we’d like to give a hearty welcome to all of our new readers who have visited and commented in the first few days of our National Ice Cream Month celebration. We hope many of you decide to stick around and become a part of our rapidly growing Ice Cream Journal family!

Second, we wanted to let you know that Turkey Hill is on Twitter. For those not familiar with Twitter (www.twitter.com), it’s sort of like a blog, but the entries are much shorter (no more than 140 characters) and more frequent (several times a day). You can check out our Twitter feed if you’d like or, if you’ve got a Twitter account of your own, you can follow us!

We should also tell you that we’ve got an Operation Hometown Hello contest using Twitter. If you take a photo of yourself (with your cell phone is fine) making a deposit in an Operation Hometown Hello box at a Turkey Hill Minit Market near you and send us a link to the photo via Twitter, you’ll be entered to win some fun Turkey Hill prizes. You get to donate to the troops AND maybe win a prize. It doesn’t get any better than that.

ONE MORE WAY TO SAY “THANK YOU”

Independence Day is just around the corner, but while we’re planning that backyard barbeque or watching that baseball game, we should take a moment to think about the brave men and women in our Armed Forces who are deployed overseas in harm’s way.

The Pennsylvania National Guard is represented by about 6,000 men and women that are currently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these brave soldiers have strong ties to those of that work here; they are our coworkers, our friends, relatives, and our neighbors. In support of those individuals, Turkey Hill Dairy and Turkey Hill Minit Markets have teamed up for something we are calling “Operation Hometown Hello.”

The operation is pretty simple: There’s a box at each of the 250 Turkey Hill Minit Markets throughout eastern, central and southern Pennsylvania. The purpose of the box is to collect donated items to be sent to the soldiers overseas. They can be items you purchase in the store or items you bring from home. When the box is filled (hopefully often), Turkey Hill Dairy and Turkey Hill Minit Markets will ship it 6,000 miles around the world to those Pennsylvania National Guard members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unfortunately we can’t send Turkey Hill ice cream or iced tea to the soldiers (trust us, we tried to think of a way to do it), but below is a list of the top 10 most requested items by the troops. Next time you’re in a Turkey Hill Minit Market, why not send a Hometown Hello by purchasing one of these items for the box?

1. Individual size peanut packets
2. Single-serve beef jerky products
3. Packs of gum
4. Non-chocolate candies
5. Pens and pencils
6. Pocket-sized notebooks
7. Single-serve bags of flavored sunflower seeds
8. Individual packs of pretzel rods
