PHINALLY! THE PHILLIES WIN THE WORLD SERIES!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

It’s a great day in Philadelphia because last night the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 4-3 to win the World Series! Philly has a team in each of the four major sports (football, baseball, hockey and basketball) and this is the city’s first championship in ANY sport since 1983. Twenty-five years is a long time to wait, but it makes that much sweeter.

Our sincerest congratulations go out the Phillies and their many, many fans (including some right here in the Turkey Hill offices). We’re proud to be a Phillies sponsor and even prouder to say that our Phillies Graham Slam is the official ice cream of Major League Baseball’s World Champions!

36 OUNCES OF ICE CREAM IN THREE MINUTES!

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Last week we told you about the Turkey Hill Eagles Touchdown Sundae Eating Contest we’ll be co-sponsoring this year with Philly’s #1 sports radio station, 610 WIP. The first contest was held this past Sunday before the Eagles season opener and needless to say, it was a battle!

In the end, Matt Clement of Lafayette Hill, PA emerged as the winner by eating 36 ounces of Eagles Touchdown Sundae ice cream in just three minutes (that’s the champ on the right). For those keeping count, that’s over two pounds of ice cream, and he wasn’t even allowed to use his hands! Congratulations to Matt. For his effort, he won a poster and helmet autographed by Eagles star Brian Dawkins. He also advances to the final showdown on November 9, where the winner will receive a prize package that includes limousine transportation, hotel accommodations and two tickets to see the Eagles take on the Giants on December 7.

The next Turkey Hill Eagles Touchdown Sundae Eating Contest will take place on September 21 before the Eagles/Steelers game. If you think you’ve got what it takes to win, feel free to sign up on the WIP website. Good luck!

ASK ERNIE: BEN FRANKLIN AND TOMATO ICE CREAM

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

The following question was submitted by Stan L. from Philadelphia.

A tour guide in Philly told my daughter that Ben Franklin’s favorite flavor of ice cream was tomato.  When she shared this with her 2nd grade class, the teacher challenged it.  Is there proof of this anywhere?

Thanks for your question, Stan. Personally I’ve never heard that one, but it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

We do know that Mr. Franklin was a big fan of ice cream (along with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington) and that he was a regular at French ice cream shops in New York City and anywhere else that sold it. In the 1770’s, he got his first taste of ice cream in Paris and was so pleased with the experience that he wrote in a letter “I am making an effort to acquire the formula so we may sample this lovely fare upon my return to Philadelphia.” This tale led to Franklin being credited with introducing ice cream to the colonial states, but no one’s really 100 percent sure about that.

It was also rumored that during the blistering hot summer of the 1786 Constitutional Convention, Franklin created an ice cream recipe and invited Congressional delegates back to his home “for a special treat that was universally popular and helped steer them toward the democracy we know today.” Unfortunately that tale has since been disproved, but it sounds nice!

As for his love of tomato ice cream, an Internet search reveals no clues to this mystery. We’re not even sure if tomato ice cream existed in Ben’s day, but we do know that tomato ice cream exists today (here’s a recipe). Either way, I’m willing to bet Ben would have  liked it.
