Second Scoop: Would you eat glow-in-the-dark jellyfish ice cream?

When the power goes out, your thoughts immediately turn to two things: Finding a flashlight and figuring out how to eat all the ice cream in your freezer before it melts. Now, an ice cream mad scientist in Britain has combined those two dilemmas by creating an ice cream that glows in the dark because it’s made with luminescent jellyfish proteins.

The ice cream, which doesn’t taste like jellyfish (we’re actually not sure what flavor it is), glows brighter when you lick it due to the reaction between the jellyfish protein and temperature and pH of your tongue.

The glowing treat’s creator, an award-winning food inventor named Charlie Francis, insists that it’s safe to eat. “I tried some,” said Francis, “and I don’t seem to be glowing anywhere.” Because jellyfish protein is somewhat expensive, a single scoop of Francis’ frosty invention sells for about $225.

Francis is the co-founder of the U.K. ice cream shop “Lick Me I’m Delicious,” which is known for its assortment of funky ice cream flavors. Also on the menu is roast beef ice cream, horseradish and Yorkshire pudding ice cream, lamb and mint ice cream, and cheddar cheese ice cream. Up next for the Lick Me team is an invisible ice cream (they’re looking for a few magicians who can help make that happen) and the hottest ice cream in the world.

Assuming you don’t mind spending $225 for a scoop of the bright jellyfish ice cream, the next natural question is, would you try it?

    Hubby & I do not like the idea of jellyfish in out ice cream. If the power is off for a long period we prefer to have a big, very big dish of our TH to bide the time.

    No where does it mention the taste of this glow in the dark ice cream – only that it doesn’t taste like jellyfish so what does it taste like? I think I’ll spend my $225 elsewhere.

    Sure, I’d try it. I’d talk to the proprietor about the exorbitant price and see if I could get it down to a manageable sum, though.

    I was mulling over whether or not I would actually try Glow in the Dark ice cream but once I saw that price,, that made my decision easy,,, NO, I wouldn’t! I can’t believe it would taste good anyhow,, made of jellyfish protein! Yuck!

    Don’t worry, I’ll find it in my freezer, even without lights.

    If today was April first, I might have said “Are you kidding me?” but it is not so I guess this is for real. I think I will pass on this one. I try to stay away from anything artificial which is what this sounds like. I will stick to my Turkey Hill favorites and skip the jellyfish ice cream.

    No, I would not taste this bizarre concoction. How about an article on long lost dairy bars? People could describe how ice cream of yester, (and near yester)day tasted and felt on the tongue.For example, where did restaurants of the past (and a few current)get that wonderful chocolate ice cream with the ice crystals in it?

    I don’t think so. I will use my flashlight to find the TH ice cream. I have PLENTY of BATTERIES. Don’t want ANYTHING to ruin my Turkey Hill.

    NO! Jelly fish sting and I would not want a jelly fish sting on my tongue. There is also the part about taste. There is no discussion about what flavors and how does it taste. Get that information and the insurance that there is no sting from the jelly fish protein. Then I might consider eating this. If it was a free sample, not a $225 ice cram cone.

    I would definitely give it a try (price aside). I find it strange how many people have an aversion to jellyfish. We eat lots of things that would seem odd if we weren’t already used to them. Besides, jellyfish are blooming in the oceans and fish are becoming scarcer. Eat more jellies!
